It
all began when three members of Bredon Jalopy Club happened to
be discharging corn at MSF, Defford Mill. The three being Mac
Taylor, Dave Collett and Eric Carlin with the usual moans and
groans that grassers seem to thrive on; it was agreed to try and
form a club of their own to be named Evesham and District Jalopy
Club.
A meeting to this end was advertised in the local papers to be
held at the Vauxhall Inn, Evesham on the second Friday of September
1968. The response was enormous and a unanimous vote was taken
to form the Club.
A meeting
was called for the following month and some 160 members signed
on.
Later
in 1968, officers were elected; rules made, equipment bought and
preparations were made to race as a club in 1969. The Club applied
to join Gloucester league and were accepted.
The
first Race Meeting was held at Toddington and the admission price
was 5 shillings (25 pence). It was a huge success; this becoming
the norm for all Evesham Meetings and Evesham became known and
respected for their expertise and efficiency.
In
the seventies it was decided that owing to the advance of the
sport, proficiency of drivers and quality of cars that the word
Jalopy be discarded and the club was renamed Evesham Autograss
Club, later to become Ltd. During the late seventies it was decided
to form a new league to be known as MAP (Midlands Autograss Promotions).
This was formed with our sister club Radford, the MAP becoming
one of the foremost leagues in the whole of Great Britain and
Northern Ireland.
In
1980 it was decided that we should in some way involve our junior
members in the racing scene. So with Radford, through MAP we decided
that at all MAP meetings we should run at least one race per meeting
for juniors, in class one cars only. (Juniors must be over 14
but under 16 on the 31st March).
This
became a great success and in 1982 MAP held the 1st National Junior
Championships.
Andrew
LeBrun became the club's first Junior Champion with Darren Coupland
as runner up.
